The Challenge
The NASA Education Office (NASA EDGE) needed to promote
the field of aerospace engineering as a promising future for
students who have the right stuff. The EDGE team wanted to
convey the long and varied history of exploration at NASA in a
way that was as creative as NASA itself. The idea was simple:
create a NASA version of the annual college basketball
tournament brackets.
The Solution
AMA Studios created a web application where visitors can fill out
brackets in which 64 NASA missions compete head to head for
the title of "Greatest Mission of All Time." Developed in Adobe
Flash, "Mission Madness" included information about each mission
and a week-by-week tally of each round of results from
public voting. |

Nearly 750,000 votes were recorded during the span of the promotion. Thousands of fans of the newer missions made their voices heard, with the final round pitting the SOHO Mission against the Super Pressure Balloon (SPB). See the final results here on nasa.gov. |
